Howard Chu has mentioned to me in 1-to-1 conversation that "There will be no
incompatible API changes.", which is why there is no SOVERSION assigned.

Not really, especially not with its filesize which is more than 4x the size
needed for the plain Makefile or an automake-enhanced lmdb.
