The article specifically mentions that the code on GitHub will stay there. I'll change the SPEC file to point there instread. It looks like freenect has a version of the OpenNI2 driver that is supposed to be placed in the %{_libdir}/openni2 directory. Is there such a thing as a directory conflict, or can both packages provide that directory?
