Sadly, this is a quite regular situation. In that case, I'm trying to find the
most *official* or *stable* URL (whatever that means)

Currently, the URL is used for trying to provide more information about your
package. It's parsed by a human. 

Does http://code.google.com/p/googlefontdirectory/ help you a bit? It seems you
could get the fonts from the checkout.
