It relies on QML, and QML will require OpenGL in Qt 5, which defeats the purpose of Unity 2D. So now I think the fallback plan is the normal (3D) Unity on llvmpipe. In any case, they dropped support for Unity 2D already. I also don't see how it would be any more convenient for non-Unity users than plasma-widget-menubar is for non-Plasma users.
