There are a lot of EWMH compatible window managers which work under GNOME,
Xfce, LXDE... But most of them don't have such a special *.desktop file. I'm
using Fluxbox under GNOME for a long time, and I don't need it. The mentioned
construct which lets appear a "GNOME/Openbox" entry in GDM, is an exception
here, and it is provided by the Openbox source package itself. With the
upcoming GNOME 3 in F15 we get rid of the window manager choice anyway, if we
follow the GNOME Shell. The "missing" *.desktop file shouldn't be a blocker
here.
