I'll check with Jesse I think. It didn't seem neat to ship a tarball with nothing changed but the 'bad stuff' removed, because that tarball would in itself be useless; it'd completely fail to compile. It seems odd to ship a package which contains a source tarball that's useless and requires further changes from the spec to work at all.
