Thats why I only use opensource drivers (and select my hardware based on that criteria). Anyways I can find nothing usefull in the strace. Can you run this under gdb from the console (do "export DISPLAY=:0.0" first) and then once it crashes switch back to the console to get a backtrace? Maybe that will give us a hint on whats going on and howto work around it.
