The segfault was caused by the GCC option "-Os" being commented in the Makefile. This caused GCC to use the default "-O2" optimisation instead, which for some reason results in a segmentation fault. The root cause of the issue is not understood so the workaround may be weak, but re-enabling the size optimization option just seemed to solve the issue for us. For debugging enthousiasts, the GCC(1) manpage states: "-Os Optimize for size. -Os enables all -O2 optimizations that do not typically increase code size.
