I'm not entirely sure what it's for :) The default may actually be different these days, I wrote the README for the Mandriva package back at version 0.1.0. I think it may not default to GPS mode any more, I'll have to check. Still, it would make a degree of sense, because it's specifically designed as a _navigation_ app, and that's not much use without GPS functionality.
