This was suggested as a diagnostic technique by Martin Schaller, with the caveat that it will significantly reduce font rendering performance, but since it seems to perform OK on my (admittedly rather fast) system and our only other options are 'package nothing' or 'package something really old', I feel comfortable advocating this as the best choice to go with.
