Yes, there was a patch, but it turned out to be necessary in both bootstrapping
and non-bootstrapping case.

Note that you might be able to use gcc-4.1 on EL-5 so the patch (and the
accompanying gcc34 override) will not be necessary then.

I assume this is now ready for full review.
