The former will check for a config file or copy a config file over. The latter will call a user's .xsession and then start start-xmonad. There are also .desktop files for both, and both should be installed in the correct location. Let me know if this works for you. Currently, the default config is the default config provided by upstream. Should we convince upstream to have it load the manpage on startup?
