I see the merit in trying to move the comments over to a mailing list. The comments are definitely hard to keep tabs on, especially for some of the older articles, and I think using HyperKitty (maybe the users list) would help make sure that commenters can get answers to their questions.
However, I wonder if people would actually be willing to make an account in FAS or sign into Hyperkitty just to leave a comment about an article or get help with a particular topic. I think that's it definitely easier than it ever was before, but I wonder if we would lose people or if they would actually sign in and post for help.
I see the benefits to both sides, but I think in the immediate sense, the comment intro is a good solution to this problem, and maybe approaching Hyperkitty as a longer-term solution might be something we could try out.
