Before I put forward my opinion I have to introduce my self. My name is Sreenivas. I live in Hyderabad, India. I signed up in Ambassador list hoping I'd start my contributions with shipping Fedora core media.
My two cents about MP3, as Sam suggested it seems to be a good idea to pop-up a window and tell the user why MP3 is not supported. It will be useful to point to help on how MP3 files can be converted to other supported formats in Fedora and any advantages, etc..
Is it possible to offer to convert from MP3 format to ogg by using some available tools when the user tries to play mp3? I am not knowledgeble about if there are patent issues involved in using MP3 to ogg format conversion.

Hi,
I know this is an overly-discussed issue, but since I get so many
questions on it I wanted to run this idea past everyone.
A common complaint I hear is that people think Fedora is "broken" when
it doesn't play MP3s. This leads to mailing list and forum traffic,
negative word-of-mouth exposure, and needless confusion.
I think the problem is that when you try to play an MP3 file... nothing
happens at all or you get an ugly codec message -- both of these indeed
seem to indicate something is broken. Why not have a pop up that
explains why Fedora doesn't play MP3s and give a link to the wiki where
it is explained in further detail?
I could file an RFE on this.... I think it would cut down on the
confusion. Has this been previously discussed? Thoughts?

We had a dialog box popup when trying to play MP3 in XMMS in earlier Red
Hat Linux releases. That didnt have much of a benefit though for
whatever reasons. The problem was that we had a number of different
players and the user experience on some was worse than the others.

Now that we have mostly settled down on Rhythmbox by default and
Gstreamer as the multimedia framework that can be shared across desktop
environments etc, its easier to do this. You can file a RFE against the
"distribution" component instead of specific players so we that if we
implement anything, we do it across the players we provide. Should
probably look at installing the fluendo plugin after a agreement or
things like that depending on how far we need to extend support to this.

I think it's a step in the right direction.
One thing Linux in General needs to stay away from is feeling unfriendly
and that someone should just know what's going on.
It wouldn't have to be more than a quick simple statement about Why MP3
support isn't native as long as the link you're sending people to gives
enough information on the ways they could still use their MP3 collection.
After all, we don't want to loose someone just because they didn't know
they could convert their MP3s to OGG.

Two things here:
i. We need to update our Moin Moin instance; we'll get some new layout
features (and problems) when that happens. Fedora Infrastructure is
accountable here, and they are working on it (big up to mmcgrath).
ii. Switching to using Plone to serve the front page means more control
over the page; Moin Moin is just too limiting. Problem here is
resources are tight to get the work done; more help is needed to get it
done sooner:

So, where Max pointed out two target points (by-next-weekend, 2 months),
there are really three points (by-next-weekend, 2 weeks, 2 months).
And, IMHO, 2 months should really be 1 month. Or even sooner. But I

This is stuck. The server needs to be upgraded from RHEL/CENTOS 4 to FC5
to get the new version of Python, which is needed for the new version of
Plone, which is needed for the authentication process to work with our
existing process.
Updating the server is hard because there's a lot of other production
stuff running on the server.
I'm offering to volunteer whatever I can to the plone project, but not
sure how to get it moving.

The Ohio Linux Fest held this past Saturday, September 30th was a great
success! The booth came together very nicely - we had Fedora T-Shirts,
Stickers, Core 5 DVDs and informational handouts available at the booth.
There were three of us primarily working the booth - Joe Connelly and
Brian Pepple. Tom "Spot" Callaway was also there, originally to hang
out with us at the Fedora booth, but ended up working the Red Hat booth
right next to us - though he was still a great help to us.
The announced crowd was just over 1200 people, between presentations the
aisles were quite packed. Our booth saw lots of foot traffic with
people ranging from new to Linux to having used it since Red Hat 6.x or
earlier and wondering what Fedora was up to.
Nearly all comments were favorable to Fedora, many people were running
Fedora in some fashion - either on their own PCs or on servers for
businesses they worked for. There were a few recurring questions
through the day, some of which where:
* Yum is slow was one of the complaints we kept hearing. It was a
pleasure to let people know that there was an updated yum in Core 6 that
was aimed at taking on any speed issues.
* I had several questions regarding the Fedora Directory Server - mainly
in regards to features it offered. There certainly seems to be interest
in this.
* We heard what I thought to be a number of comments alluding to an
animosity between the Fedora Project and Red Hat. I am not quite sure
why that thought is out there.
* There were several questions about who we worked for, etc. It was
nice to reply with we were just members of the Fedora Project community
helping out. I think it really helped reinforce that there is a lot of
room for community involvement in the project.
* And of course there were lots of when is Core 6 coming out and what
new features will be in it.
Later in the afternoon we also had a "Birds of a Feather" session. Tom
Callaway was there and was an excellent and knowledgeable speaker and it
was great to have him there. Some of the items brought up were Fedora
and multimedia (mp3's, DVD playback, etc), Xen and virtualization and
new features and improvements in Core 6.
All in all it was a great show. Lots of fun for everyone involved I
think. I was very happy with how the booth turned out and I think
Fedora was very well represented there. I want to thank all the people
that helped get me the materials and information I needed for this event
- including Max and David Barzilay.

I proposed the same thing back in March but the idea was shot down for
both technical and political reasons, even if the landscape was the
same: gstreamer, rhythmbox, totem and fluendo plugin. Nice to see it
raised again.

We had a dialog box popup when trying to play MP3 in XMMS in earlier Red
Hat Linux releases. That didnt have much of a benefit though for
whatever reasons. The problem was that we had a number of different
players and the user experience on some was worse than the others.

Now that we have mostly settled down on Rhythmbox by default and
Gstreamer as the multimedia framework that can be shared across desktop
environments etc, its easier to do this. You can file a RFE against the
"distribution" component instead of specific players so we that if we
implement anything, we do it across the players we provide. Should
probably look at installing the fluendo plugin after a agreement or
things like that depending on how far we need to extend support to this.

I know this is an overly-discussed issue, but since I get so many
questions on it I wanted to run this idea past everyone.
A common complaint I hear is that people think Fedora is "broken" when
it doesn't play MP3s. This leads to mailing list and forum traffic,
negative word-of-mouth exposure, and needless confusion.
I think the problem is that when you try to play an MP3 file... nothing
happens at all or you get an ugly codec message -- both of these indeed
seem to indicate something is broken. Why not have a pop up that
explains why Fedora doesn't play MP3s and give a link to the wiki where
it is explained in further detail?
I could file an RFE on this.... I think it would cut down on the
confusion. Has this been previously discussed? Thoughts?

I think it's a step in the right direction.
One thing Linux in General needs to stay away from is feeling unfriendly
and that someone should just know what's going on.
It wouldn't have to be more than a quick simple statement about Why MP3
support isn't native as long as the link you're sending people to gives
enough information on the ways they could still use their MP3 collection.
After all, we don't want to loose someone just because they didn't know
they could convert their MP3s to OGG.

Two things here:
i. We need to update our Moin Moin instance; we'll get some new layout
features (and problems) when that happens. Fedora Infrastructure is
accountable here, and they are working on it (big up to mmcgrath).
ii. Switching to using Plone to serve the front page means more control
over the page; Moin Moin is just too limiting. Problem here is
resources are tight to get the work done; more help is needed to get it
done sooner:

So, where Max pointed out two target points (by-next-weekend, 2 months),
there are really three points (by-next-weekend, 2 weeks, 2 months).
And, IMHO, 2 months should really be 1 month. Or even sooner. But I

This is stuck. The server needs to be upgraded from RHEL/CENTOS 4 to FC5
to get the new version of Python, which is needed for the new version of
Plone, which is needed for the authentication process to work with our
existing process.
Updating the server is hard because there's a lot of other production
stuff running on the server.
I'm offering to volunteer whatever I can to the plone project, but not
sure how to get it moving.

The Ohio Linux Fest held this past Saturday, September 30th was a great
success! The booth came together very nicely - we had Fedora T-Shirts,
Stickers, Core 5 DVDs and informational handouts available at the booth.
There were three of us primarily working the booth - Joe Connelly and
Brian Pepple. Tom "Spot" Callaway was also there, originally to hang
out with us at the Fedora booth, but ended up working the Red Hat booth
right next to us - though he was still a great help to us.
The announced crowd was just over 1200 people, between presentations the
aisles were quite packed. Our booth saw lots of foot traffic with
people ranging from new to Linux to having used it since Red Hat 6.x or
earlier and wondering what Fedora was up to.
Nearly all comments were favorable to Fedora, many people were running
Fedora in some fashion - either on their own PCs or on servers for
businesses they worked for. There were a few recurring questions
through the day, some of which where:
* Yum is slow was one of the complaints we kept hearing. It was a
pleasure to let people know that there was an updated yum in Core 6 that
was aimed at taking on any speed issues.
* I had several questions regarding the Fedora Directory Server - mainly
in regards to features it offered. There certainly seems to be interest
in this.
* We heard what I thought to be a number of comments alluding to an
animosity between the Fedora Project and Red Hat. I am not quite sure
why that thought is out there.
* There were several questions about who we worked for, etc. It was
nice to reply with we were just members of the Fedora Project community
helping out. I think it really helped reinforce that there is a lot of
room for community involvement in the project.
* And of course there were lots of when is Core 6 coming out and what
new features will be in it.
Later in the afternoon we also had a "Birds of a Feather" session. Tom
Callaway was there and was an excellent and knowledgeable speaker and it
was great to have him there. Some of the items brought up were Fedora
and multimedia (mp3's, DVD playback, etc), Xen and virtualization and
new features and improvements in Core 6.
All in all it was a great show. Lots of fun for everyone involved I
think. I was very happy with how the booth turned out and I think
Fedora was very well represented there. I want to thank all the people
that helped get me the materials and information I needed for this event
- including Max and David Barzilay.

I proposed the same thing back in March but the idea was shot down for
both technical and political reasons, even if the landscape was the
same: gstreamer, rhythmbox, totem and fluendo plugin. Nice to see it
raised again.
