The tool I use is jEdit from http://www.jedit.org because it doesn't need all that finicky setup and DTD rebuilding that emacs does; it just works out-of-the-box. You still get syntax coloring, tag completion, a context-sensitive tag display, and even spell checking for your XML document. HTH
