We also have about 30 VMs running Centos 5 and 389 DS without any problem of resources, with a directory of about 55000 entries (VMWare ESX Server), all replicated. Also, real machines.

I've ben running test case of 389 1.2.5 on CentOS 5.5 x86_64 (host &
guest) in a VirtualBox, and i've had no problems such as those you've
described.
