...and it just occurred to me that you may be asking for a basic contact
list/address book, and not mailing lists.

If a contact list is what you're looking for, log into the FDS admin
utility, create some users, and you've got yourself a contact list.
You'll just need to configure your client programs to query the LDAP
server and chances are it'll just work.
