Importing Users

Has anyone else experienced a very long time when importing a ldif file with a size of about 42 Mb?  It is currently taking me about 2 hours to import the users using the Console.
Would it be faster using the command line tool?
I am at a loss as how to run it from the command line as it is requesting a back end instance, and I am not exactly sure what it is looking for.
