as a sidenote: do you know which part of gnome does the brightness OSD?
because that part really needs to talk to gnome-power-manager!

(right now you have the behavior where if I as user crank the
brightness up, say because of bad light, it works for like 20 seconds
and then g-p-m comes in and things I want to dimm my screen again to
the battery level. Same for the other direction)
