I had a similar issue: "curl http://hostname"; failing on my Rawhide
system with DNS complaints, but "nslookup hostname" would work.
Typically, "curl" would time out after 5 seconds, while "nslookup"
would succed in less than a tenth of a second. [Alternatively, try
"time getent ahosts hostname".]

Long BZ report here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=454206

My issue appears to be my ISP's DNS servers not properly handling
IPv6 type requests. [Actually, some would work, some wouldn't.]

This sound like your issue?

[Thanks to Ulrich Drepper for all his help on this....]
