dmix has nothing to do with the kernel. It's completely in userspace
parts of ALSA.

Of course it is :)
But something tells me he won't be able to make new userspace alsa work
with ~1,5 year old kernel.
Anyway... the best thing to do is to upgrade to Fedora 9.
