Some machines don't like vga16fb. I've got a via-based system where using it results in horrific skew (every line is about 8 pixels further right than the previous line). I've also seen sis-based systems where hitting the vga crtcs directly works fine for the external video out, but leaves the TFT scanning out garbage.
