Here's the output before Rhythmbox:
ps -AH | egrep -e 'gnome|naut'
24366 ? 00:00:00 gnome-keyring-d

and after:
ps -AH | egrep -e 'gnome|naut'
24366 ? 00:00:00 gnome-keyring-d
24556 ? 00:00:00 gnome-vfs-daemo
24561 ? 00:00:00 gnome-settings-
24583 ? 00:00:00 gnome-screensav

The problem is that gnome-settings-daemon gets started and this one is initializing the default gnome desktop environment utilities. It is not possible to tell it not to reset the background. There is a key in gconf for this, but it is not used at all anymore. You could try to get this solved upstream, but I doubt that this will change.
