If it does not match Pidgin and do one better..
Then Pidgin should continue to be the default until Empathy or some
other IM does..

I don't think 'default' was discussed yet, but I'd agree with you on
that point that Pidgin should be considered Fedora's 'default' (is one
even really chosen?). Nevertheless, Pidgin is not Gnome's official IM
client.

And this makes clear, why preferences are clutter and their UI simply sucks.
