Perhaps my understanding is wrong then. I thought that with help from
rel-eng, I could build libgpod and get it into the buildroots in order
to rebuild the other packages against?  Then they can all be pushed
together to updates-testing.  Is that not possible?

Unless the build system can't do this, I think it is a wise thing to
do.  I'll elaborate in a reply to Ville's mail in a moment.
