Development tools depend on their corresponding packages. And you probably removed gdm or something KDE depended on, without the KDE equivalent in place. Sounds normal, unless you have a specific example of a dependency that doesn't make sense.
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" (-y) and now it`s just installing a little more than 100 packages.. that leaves another 100 packages that are being removed when you remove gnome but not being reinstalled..
