Or you can use the old days xwd command (included in xorg-x11-apps)... xwd -root -silent -out screenshot.xwd and then import in gimp or convert in pnm with xwdtopnm (in netpbm-progs) xwdtopnm screenshot.xwd > screenshot.pbm You can also dump other local/remote displays with the -display option....
