squashfs isn't compatible between releases.

And Linus allowed it in the kernel?

Nope. It is a custom patch instead of using cramfs because the compression and performance is better.


In any case, the decision to use it for the stage2 should probably
revisited in that light...

It is fine for that purpose. Just dont use it anywhere else.
