What i noticed is that /sbin/service haldaemon status reports
"stopped" when run as a user, but "running", when running as root, so
there is probably some permission problem somewhere.

Ah, you're right. I was a bit puzzled about that -- sometimes hald is
really dead (no g-p-m icon in notification area), more often it's
actually still running.
