I've tried with the 2.6.19-1.2895 x86_64 kernel,
and now it requires both acpi=off and noapic.
Without noapic it panics immediately.
upgraded the BIOS to at least 1.09 and the system requires no special
parameters to install and run. However, adding hda=noprobe and
hdc=noprobe significantly improves disk i/o (from 4MB/s to 65MB/s).
Problem solved.
