The simple stupid robust answer is: — don't assume anything, snapshot all changed files — only allow full-transaction rollbacks – when a rollback is requested, also rollback all the packages that touched the snapshoted files since You can get by without all this most of the times, but then Murphy says the day you need the rollback you'll have one of the corner cases shotcuts don't handle -- Nicolas Mailhot
