No, it doesn't.

I've checked this 5 minutes ago. Rebooted my computer with 915resolution 
turned off. The 'intel' driver not only does _not_ set the proper resolution, 
it completely fails.
As the X server starts, the whole screen goes black (but X is running all the 
time - no restart/respawn, etc.).

If there's an interest I can provide Xorg.log,
