What is the downside of using a PAE kernel?

I've got an Athlon 64 where I'm still running the 32 bit OS (for
compatibility mainly). Is it possible to install and run the 64 bit
kernel with a fully 32 bit userland? Would that be better/worse than
running a 32 bit PAE kernel?

I don't speak for anybody but myself - that's enough trouble.
