Font rendering regression after updating to version 2.2.1 is a known issue for which I had submitted bug 198082. Try to install the "FC5" packages with option "--oldpackage" and set the hinting from "medium" to "slight" (or vice versa (?)). Truetype fonts look again better for me now.
