I don't understand why. I think the main reason is Red Hat has historically been not too interested in the desktop. New fonts are seen by the Red Hat people in charge more as a source of new support requests than as a way to improve users experience (kind of sad given all the energy poured in the past in BlueCurve for example, which was a way more dangerous project will much smaller benefits)
<Old Man Support Speaking> Well some of the most expensive (time consuming, hard to satisfy) problems have been dealing with fonts and things like terminfo. Corporate customers expect fonts to be 'exactly' what they saw on whatever they used last. Trying to make sure that some java or motif application didn't lose letters on some window because it expected the world to be 75x75 X11R4 fonts caused a lot of heartburn for support at times. Dealing with this every year or so makes you a bit gun shy corporate wise </Old Man>
