Suspend recently started working on my laptop (from a 4-letter system vendor where the 3rd and 4th characters of the name are the same) using FC5. I have SATA HDDs and a recent kernel added support for suspend/resume for SATA which had been missing. I've been using suspend/resume a lot since I found it was working and it hasn't missed a beat since. Of course, you're problems might be different to mine.
