I have ONBOOT=yes also for "eth0" (! That's probably also your
LAN.) and then things work fine for me.

I also got problems if the HWADDR is not specified. I think it might
be nice if the network drivers are only specified in /etc/modprobe.conf
and no HWADDR is needed at all.
