You can use gnome-power-manager to set policy when on AC and battery. * HAL should now detect the power button on PPC (works for my iBook clamshell), so that when pressed, the logout, shutdown, restart dialogue is displayed. You'll need a very up to date g-p-m for this to work. * HAL will can set a LowPowerMode when on battery power (just like LaptopMode), that should save even more battery power when on battery.
