When doing a yum update, it selects all the package available without giving a choice as to what packages to download i.e. downloading openoffice downloads all language flavors which means that i get everything and I only want english, and this happens to everyone. It is a terrible waste of bandwidth, the solution of course is to allow selection of only the flavor you want. This is a suggestion for discussion and development.
This is because you have all the language components install to begin with. The old languages needs to be updated as well because the old ones are dependent on the old version of openoffice (to continue your example). Just don't install all the stuff you don't want in the first place and you should be good.
