Well, it would be good if somebody told upstream before that release if
there are problems on the R side.

Somebody (me) told upstream that there's this issue. But R releases are scheduled, same as Fedora's, twice a year, but in different months. So it is what it is. They are not going to release sooner just for us. I asked if they could provide a patch for the current release until the new release happens, but I would not count on it.
