This proposal mentions major versions 3, 5, and 6, but I don't see any mention of major version 4.

I don't pretend to understand this in detail, but I am maintaining a project that currently calls for "protoc 25.3" or older, which I think comes from major version 4. Fedora currently has 3.19.6, so that is perfect for my needs.

My concern is that eventually protobuf3 might be deprecated, and I might have to switch to major version 4.

Therefore, I'd appreciate a clarification regarding major version 4 in the change proposal.

There is no intention of packaging protobuf4. We will retain protobuf3
as a compatibility package for as long as needed. But it will be
deprecated to prevent *new* dependencies on it.

Sounds good. Thanks.
