I think the correct solution here will be to build the “official” Python bindings in the re2 source distribution, which are actively maintained and which also provide a somewhat-compatible “import re2,” but are distributed on PyPI as google-re2 rather than fb-re2. As the new maintainer of the re2 package in Fedora, I can do this at any time, but because the two packages would conflict, python-fb-re2 would need to be retired. I’ve been trying to get the consent of the python-fb-re2 maintainer, but so far there has been no response.
