Starting with version 555, nvidia-kmod-open will be the default option. 

As I recall, only the default for "recent" GPUs.

One could suggest only recent GPUs will have
the better out of the box experience, and others
not so much.

This seems like a reasonable approach without compromising UEFI Secure Boot usefulness.
