If glibc continues to support but deprecate the older syslog API along
with the Right Solution(TM) API then there is no need to break binary
compatibility for as long as time period deemed convenient. API to provide functionality improvements
Absolutely. In fact, I can't see why we would ever have to break it.
Any replacement of syslog should be at least be as capable as the
current one, so the old API should be easily implemented on top of
the new one.
Generally thats the procedure but sometimes the older API might be brain
dead and one cannot sanely extend it or build on top of it. So
deprecating the older API and creating a new one is an option to retain
binary compatibility. Pre GTK 2.6 file dialog API vs the newer one is a
example of the latter.
