I think it would make sense to make this request in the BZ you reference bellow. And also, providing PR fixing the issue might help to convince the maintainer.

But other than that, retiring would not be that bad thing in your case, because after retirement, there is 8 weeks window to unretire the package without re-review, that way you could pick it up ...
