Yes, that's a really bad error message. My reaction would be "What nonsense is that? I haven't swapped any clients." If it had at least said "byte-swapped" it would probably have gotten me searching in the right direction, but if the X server wants to be helpful it should say "big/little-endian mismatch; the option AllowSwappedClients is off".
