It just does not make sense to explicitly list every single file in the RPM. Wildcards are often the only reasonable way. It is already enough of a PITA that we are now forced to explicitly maintain the soname for libraries in our specfiles. (I have always been opposed to that. Soversions are the main thing for which I used to *always* use a wildcard.)
