This happened to me too a few times, but on "bare metal". At first I thought "oh no, the Wayland on NVidia session crashed and took all my stuff with me", but after "logging in", all my stuff was still running. It looks like there's situations in which you're getting kicked back to the GDM "login screen" instead of the gnome-shell "lock screen".
