In an earlier reply I did say a tag would also work.

To me, a branch ref seems more natural than a tag that keeps being
updated, but either would be fine. Git tags always seem like slightly
second class citizens compared to branches.

One minor downside of a tag is that tag updates aren't fetched if you
use --no-tags or the tagOpt config for the branch is false. I don't
use those though, so I'd be fine with a tag.
