You are correct; however the crucial difference between then and now is 
that PulseAudio was installable (and therefore testable) in Fedora 7 
prior to Fedora 8 making it the default.

That is not the case with PipeWire today.

If "Test Day" requires running rawhide (or booting a LiveUSB image) then 
I'm not going to be able to do meanigful testing with my actual desktop 
environment and applications.
